Nutritional Centre Case Study Five year old Alhassan was brought to the medical centre by his mother after suffering from a fever for a number of days. They had travelled some distance within the district to attend the centre. The diagnosis of malaria was confirmed by a blood test which was taken and analysed at the Medical Centre. Because Alhassan was very dehydrated, he was kept in for observation for the day and given fluids. He was also given a child's dose of malaria drugs. Other children in the area have died after being given adult doses of the drugs by untrained pharmacists. Although a common problem, it is not unusual for parents to not seek medical attention for malaria. By providing free medical care to children, through 58i's child health sponsorship scheme, one of the main barriers to timely medical intervention has been taken away. |
